The new year is the perfect time to set new goas for yourself. While you are setting goals to be more outgoing, become more fit, or to eat healthier, do not forget about your dental health. As your dentist in Dunwoody, we have three easy resolutions for you to maintain a healthy smile all year long. With a few simple changes to your daily life, you will promote the health of your teeth and gums for a beautiful smile.
Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day
You have been told time and time again that you need to brush your teeth twice a day, every day. However, only seven out of ten Americans actually follow through with this. While it may not seem like a very big deal to skip brushing every now and then, you place your oral health at risk. Brushing is vital to removing plaque and tarter from the teeth, which are responsible for gum disease and tooth decay.
You need to use an ADA-approved fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean all surfaces of the teeth. Hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle from the gum line and use gentle motions to clean the teeth. You should brush for at least two minutes twice a day.
Floss Your Teeth Daily
In addition to flossing, you need to floss your teeth each day. Unfortunately, the majority of people would rather wash the dishes or clean the toilet instead of flossing, which is why 27% of patients lie to their dentist about flossing daily.
Flossing is vital to preventing gum disease as it removes plaque and tarter from in between the teeth and the gum line, which cannot be cleaned with a toothbrush. Use an ADA-approved dental floss to floss daily. Insert the floss between two teeth and form a “C” shape around a tooth. Gently slide the floss down to the gum line and back up to the crown of the tooth. Repeat this for each tooth.
Visit the Dentist Twice a Year
Your home oral hygiene is only half the care you need for a beautiful, healthy smile. You need to visit the dentist twice a year for a cleaning and checkup, as recommended by the American Dental Association. A professional cleaning will clean below the gum line to remove plaque and tarter that cannot be removed at home with brushing and flossing.
We will perform a comprehensive examination to monitor the health of your teeth while detecting dental problems early. With early detection, we provide the necessary intervention to protect and restore the health of your teeth and gums.
As the new year starts, now is the ideal time to recommit to your dental health. We will work together to help you reach your goals for a healthy smile. As your family dentist, we offer the complete dental services you need to maintain a healthy, beautiful smile all year long.
